A full-day tour of Jaipur revealed why this great city is considered one of India’s foremost cultural attractions. After an early start, we drove up to the Amber Fort, a beautiful sandstone palace perched on a hilltop. We toured the fort and then headed to the foothill lake. We kept our eyes peeled for elephants, which sometimes like to bathe in the lake. Once back in Jaipur we explored the City Palace (a fusion of Rajasthani and Mughal architecture) and the 18th-century Jantar Mantar observatory, and admired the latticed façade of the Hawa Mahal, or Palace of Winds.
We stopped for a second night at ITC Rajputana.
