Cadiz, Spain

Cadiz is an ancient port on a peninsula in the Andalucia region Southwestern Spain, surrounded almost entirely by water. As you walk its streets, consider that it's believed to be the oldest continuously inhabited settlement in Europe, having been founded as Gadir by the Phoenicians in about 1100 BC. An important trading port and home to the Spanish Navy, attacks by pirates in the 17th century led to the construction of defensive bastions, castles and watchtowers. In the 18th century the river to Seville silted up and Cadiz took over the monopoly of the new World Trade becoming the wealthiest port in Western Europe.
