Koper, Slovenia

Koper, also known as the ‘town of a hundred suns’ is characterised by its ancient history, unforgettable sea views, and lush green surroundings of extensive vineyards, olive groves and orchards. It is the oldest town in Slovenia and has been reigned over by the Romans, Venetians, French Italians, Austrians, Byzantine Empire and Aquileia Patriarchs. The longest reign over the city was that of Venetian Republic, (1279 – 1797), when Koper experienced economic and cultural prosperity. The Venetian period is still echoed within the city’s architecture, and despite being rebuilt many times, it has preserved its mediaeval character and is a member of the European Association of Medieval Cities.

Mel writes: The highlight of my day at Koper was to join a tour of the 26km long Postojna Cave near Postojna in southwestern Slovenia. It is the second-longest cave system in the country and has a vast collection all types of cave formation. The cave has been there so long that there are creatures in the pools which have evolved to have no eyes. An MP4 video of my cave tour may be seen here, and you will see me in it.
