Kotor, Montenegro

Nestled in between the almost overhanging limestone cliffs of Orjen and Lovcen, the city of Kotor is situated amongst one of the Mediterranean’s most impressive landscapes. Located on the Bay of Kotor, a natural fjord near the coast of the Adriatic Sea, it is the oldest town in Montenegro with roots embedded deep in the ancient world. Characterized by cobbled winding streets and squares, this well preserved mediaeval Old Town has earned Kotor's listing as a UNESCO world natural and historical heritage site. The ancient architecture includes several town squares, Phoenician palaces and Romanesque churches, such as Kotor Cathedral. It is also home to a maze of museums including the Maritime Museum which explores the local seafaring history.

The details of our visit

We started to climb the path to the top of the city wall but there was no railing to hold onto and Mary was uncertain about coming back down again safely, so we abandoned circumnavigating the wall and explored the city, which is characterised by very narrow passages between multi storey buildings, obviously due to the lack of ground area, which is probably why there are no grassed areas or gardens anywhere. The whole town is overrun with contented cats, all in excellent condition. The quantity and scale of souvenir shops indicates that entrepreneurship is thriving well, (which in some other countries hardly exists at all, due to their having a generous Welfare State).
